“My Style” ATLA #2, Sokka
Next is Sokka, who is definitely one of my favorite characters. Almost immediately in the first episode, I liked him. Something that’s great about ATLA is how much the characters feel like real people. That definitely applies to Sokka. He very quickly came off to me as extremely insecure, which was only backed up when you find out that he’s the only man in the southern water tribe who got left behind. I think a lot of Sokka’s sarcasm and intentional digs at women are his attempt to act like he’s still cool and manly despite not being taken along. He definitely grows as a character over the course of the series, with his experiences with Suki being a big contribution to him turning into more of an adult. But, without losing his sense of humor or smart mouth.
He’s also the only non-bender in Team Avatar, which lends itself to some interesting, subtextual social themes that apparently play out later in Legend of Korra (which I haven’t seen yet).
