hyperdecant:

We have to decide which one of us needs to stay behind.

I will stay.

I don’t talk enough about Armin, so that’s what I’m gonna do now.

So this is the part where Armin volunteers to stay behind, probably knowing that Jean and Reiner have already mulled over the inevitable decision in their heads and are having trouble confronting the hard truth.

Armin cuts to the chase, takes less than 3 seconds to make the call that Reiner says will have to happen in 3 minutes. The answer is obvious, isn’t it? He’s wounded and there’s only one horse, if they run into titans, Jean and Reiner will have a better chance fighting their way through than Armin will, who has a head wound and is definitely not in good shape to use his 3DMG, even though it is undamaged.

Think about how Reiner have tried to help Armin by putting himself at risk for Armin on at least two occasions. During their trainee days, he helped Armin carry his pack when he fell behind. After they encountered the Female Type Titan, Reiner picked him up and ran to safety. Think about how Armin reacted in both situations. He snatched the pack back from Reiner and ran to the front, using all his strength to catch up to the squad. While Reiner was carrying him, he deduced the Female Type Titan’s identity and where she’s headed/who she’s after within minutes. Never once did Armin allow himself to be treated like a burden. Even here, in this scene, he knows the chances of him surviving without a horse and without his friends are slim to none, but he’s still making one final contribution — perhaps the most important contribution from any soldier participating in the expedition — he wants to pass a message on to Irvin, which is probably his conclusion of the identity of the Female Type Titan. If he’s resolved to die a grisly, lonely death in the middle of nowhere, he will die honourably as a dutiful soldier, having done his part to contribute mankind’s victory.

So don’t ever call Armin Arlelt a coward. He knows how to live and die on his own terms.
